Kuraya Takashi

Kuraya Takashi’s series Pets is made up of cropped photographs of posters of missing pets. Most of these pictures were probably taken casually in daily life and then forgotten in computers or on cell phones. However, once these animals were lost, these forgotten images suddenly acquired a great sentimental value and they were displayed to the world to provide information. The most memorable sentences were pulled from each poster, translated from Japanese to English using automatic translation software, and then retranslated from English to Japanese to create a caption. Kuraya admits to “feeling a guilty pleasure from peeping at the private visual experience of other people,” and recognizes “the specificity of photography as a media whose value changes according to time and the environment.”
